Insurance & Funding

Navigating insurance and government funding for medical equipment in BC. Common questions answered.

Does BC MSP cover medical equipment rentals?

BC MSP (Medical Services Plan) does not directly cover durable medical equipment rentals. However, the BC Orthoses and Prosthetics Coverage and the Community Living BC (CLBC) program may cover specific items for eligible individuals. The best step is to speak with your physician or a social worker who can direct you to the appropriate provincial assistance program for your situation.

Do you direct bill to extended health insurance providers?

We do not currently direct bill to insurance providers. We issue a detailed itemized receipt and, where applicable, a letter of medical necessity (with a physician referral), which you can submit to your extended health plan (e.g., Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Great-West Life, Manulife, Desjardins) for reimbursement. Many extended health plans cover mobility aids — contact your insurer to confirm your coverage and limits before renting.

What documentation do I need for an insurance claim?

We provide a full itemized receipt upon payment showing the equipment type, rental period, daily or weekly rate, GST, and total paid. If your insurer requires a letter of medical necessity or a physician's prescription, please obtain that from your doctor before or after the rental — we can note the rental details to match the dates if needed. You can download your invoice at any time from your online account.

Is WorkSafeBC funding available?

If your need for equipment arises from a workplace injury covered by WorkSafeBC, your case manager may approve rental costs as part of your rehabilitation plan. Contact your WorkSafeBC case manager directly with the equipment details and our contact information. We can provide a quote letter on request.

Does ICBC cover medical equipment after a motor vehicle accident?

ICBC Enhanced Care may cover medical equipment required as part of your recovery after a motor vehicle accident in BC. Your ICBC recovery specialist or care coordinator can authorize rental costs. We recommend contacting ICBC first to confirm authorization before placing your order, as they may have preferred suppliers or require pre-approval.

Is there funding through Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC)?

Veterans Affairs Canada provides funding for aids and devices for eligible veterans through the Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program and the Veterans Independence Program. If you are an eligible veteran, contact your VAC case manager with your equipment needs and we can provide a written quote to support your application.

Does the Red Cross Assistive Devices program operate in this area?

The Canadian Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) provides free short-term equipment loans in some areas. We recommend checking the Red Cross website or calling 1-800-418-1111 to confirm what is available in your community. If HELP does not have the specific item you need, or if your timeline is urgent, we can typically deliver the same day.

Is GST charged on medical equipment rentals?

Yes, GST (5%) applies to all equipment rentals and sales. BC PST is exempt on qualifying mobility aids including wheelchairs, transport chairs, and mobility scooters under the BC Provincial Sales Tax Exemptions and Refunds Regulation. Hospital beds and other home health equipment may be subject to PST — contact us if you need clarification for a specific item.
